FX-CHRYSIN:
THE NEXT GENERATION OF BODYBUILDING SUPPLEMENTATION
By John Basedow

It's been said that the only constant in this world is change. Change promotes progress and ultimately leads to growth and improvement.  If you don't believe this just flip through some old photo albums and see if you don't cringe at shots taken five, ten, or fifteen years ago. You'll probably notice positive alterations in your current appearance, clothes, and personal style as compared to your past self. The same truth applies to the world of bodybuilding supplementation. In years past, the spectrum of physique-improving products was limited to a few weight gain shakes and amino acid tablets. Since then the fitness industry has experienced such explosive growth that it's difficult to keep track of, not to mention pronounce, the latest in muscle building and fat loss pills and potions.  Insulin  mimickers, cell volumizers, thermogenic compounds, and anti-catabolics took the marketplace by storm with promises of increasing muscle mass and decreasing fat.

Even more recently, a wave of hormone manipulating substances called testosterone boosters rolled in to meet the demands of serious weight-trainers. Taking their cue from anabolic steroids, which of course are synthetically created testosterone derivatives and illegal to use without a prescription, naturally produced testosterone metabolites like DHEA and androstenedione filled store shelves and magazine pages with a media frenzy.  Images of radical strength gains, harder muscles, and better cuts were further fueled by the introduction of the most direct testosterone precursor androstenediol. While supplemental doses of each of these natural hormone manipulators have been shown to increase serum testosterone in scientific studies, smart users question whether these elevated levels could eventually lead to some of the unpleasant side effects often associated with their synthetic steroid cousins. To put these fears to rest comes the next generation of bodybuilding supplementation, pioneered by a product called FX-Chrysin.

For those familiar with the world of botany, chrysin or Flavone X is a naturally occurring chemical extracted from a plant source. Widely used by European strength athletes, chrysin has been reported to produce 30% serum testosterone increases, a modest number when measured against the 140% + elevations of other testosterone boosters. This feat, however, is only a minor part of why chrysin is beginning to rock the bodybuilding world. The primary source of interest in chrysin centers around its function as a powerful "anti-aromatase." Aromatase is an enzyme responsible for the conversion of testosterone and its precursors into estrogen. When bodybuilders alter their normal bodily production of testosterone by using supplements, aromatase activity rises in an effort to maintain a balance between testosterone and estrogen ratios. Simply put, increased testosterone production usually results in increased estrogen production. In men, a substantial rise in estrogen levels is unwanted to say the least as it can translate to unwanted feminizing side effects, including enlarged nipples, testicular shrinkage, and greater fat deposition. While these drawbacks are more commonly linked to anabolic steroids than over-the-counter natural supplements, it's clear why minimizing aromatase activity when boosting testosterone production should be a concern of every bodybuilder. By competitively binding to the active site of the enzyme and blocking its ability to interact with testosterone, chrysin has been shown to be the most effective anti-aromatase of all natural flavonoids and this ability was evidenced in human tissue (in vitro) during a landmark study at the University of California.

Many hardcore weight-trainers are taking the benefits of FX-Chrysin, created by Genetic Evolutionary Nutrition, a step further by "stacking" it with other testosterone boosters like androstenedione and androstenediol. Theoretically, combining these ingredients would not only maximize testosterone production but also provide protection against any resultant excessive estrogen build-up. Putting theory into practice, current users are realizing this revolutionary formulation does indeed produce dramatic hormone increases along with the necessary safeguards from side effects. While I've received rave reports of strength and muscle gains from bodybuilders stacking FX-Chrysin with androstenediol, this combination can be hard on the wallet and I've also heard impressive stats from users taking FX-Chrysin by itself.

As far as dosage is concerned, two 500 mg capsules of FX-Chrysin a day seems to provide optimal results. Since flavonoids are dietary supplements, moderate doses are considered quite safe but women, and to a lesser extent men, are advised to be cautious in the long-term usage of any product that can limit normal estrogen production. That's why cycling hormone manipulating compounds like FX-Chrysin (taking for a month and then stopping for a month) is often advised.

GLUTAMINE:
ANTI-CATABOLIC MUSCLE BUILDER
by John Basedow

I just finished a personal consultation with a reader named Kevin who's main concern was to find out what new miraculous muscle building supplement would be next to hit the already overcrowded marketplace. Sometimes we become so preoccupied with the future that we fail to notice the benefits of what the present holds. I guess it's the "grass is always greener on the other side of the mountain" philosophy. The trouble with this mindset comes when we reach that destination only to find it's not the answer to our hopes but just another unfulfilling valley that leaves us longing for what we left behind. I've recently found a previously overlooked "diamond in the rough" in the world of fitness and bodybuilding supplementation. It's called glutamine and it's probably the most underrated product on the market today when it comes to building a lean, muscular body.

Glutamine...I'm sure you've heard the word before and probably haven't thought much about it. It's not a "media darling" of the exercise publications. Though it's been on the market longer than many of its supplement contemporaries, including pyruvate, creatine, and the new testosterone boosters androstenedione and androstenediol, it doesn't share in their hype and glitzy exposure of major advertising campaigns.
Glutamine, as many of you may know, is an amino acid. In fact, sixty percent of the free floating amino acid pool in our muscle cells is comprised of glutamine, making it the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue. While it's not technically an "essential" amino acid since our body produces it on its own, glutamine is found primarily in the brain, skeletal muscle, and lungs and is considered "conditionally essential" because its levels can become so depleted during stressful situations, like illness and intense exercise, that we need supplemental amounts to keep its muscle and blood reserves full. Since maintaining glutamine levels is so vital to the proper functioning of the body, many European hospitals routinely administer an intravenous drip of this amino acid to patients in an effort to preserve muscle mass and retard catabolism (muscle breakdown) after surgery and treatment of major infections.

Informative tidbits like that may be great comfort to the seriously ill, but how do they apply to healthy male and female natural bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts? Well, as healthy natural bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts, we put our bodies under enormous amounts of stress everyday. Regular weight-training and long-term cardiovascular activity, particularly when coupled with the caloric restriction of definition enhancing meal plans, are extremely taxing situations which diminish glutamine stores and can lead to substantial muscle mass loss. That's why glutamine's ability to decrease the catabolic effects of cortisol by up to 70% has led to it being called the "anti-overtraining" supplement. The importance of glutamines anti-catabolic powers cannot be stated strongly enough. Keep in mind that many of the anabolic (muscle-building) benefits of even the most powerful steroids are actually linked to their anti-catabolic properties. In other words, steroid usage allows weight-trainers to work out harder and grow bigger by simultaneously reducing or preventing the muscle fiber breakdown that would normally occur from rigorous training programs. While steroids are illegal (and health-risking), fortunately good ol' glutamine is not.

Along with being a potent anti-catabolic agent, glutamine has also been shown to increase growth hormone levels, muscle cell hydration, glycogen (muscle fuel) storage, protein synthesis, immune system function, as well as decrease body-fat deposition. By preventing glutamine depletion in muscles after stressful workouts, glutamine supplementation can result in bigger, stronger muscle cells.

You're probably wondering why, if glutamine can really accomplish all these wonders, it's not the number one fitness product.  That brings me to why I originally referred to glutamine as a "diamond in the rough." Unfortunately, since much of the commercially available, orally ingested glutamine supplements get wasted during the digestive process, and don't ever reach the bloodstream, little is usually left over for vital muscle growth/repair purposes. That's why very high (not to mention expensive) amounts were often needed to notice any result at all. A company called Genetic Evolutionary Nutrition (GEN), however, recently found a way to break through this barrier and tap into the true potential of this exciting supplement. By combining glutamine with the patented Liposorb complex, chemically termed Plasmologen Lysophosphatidyl Choline or LPC, the intake of glutamine through the gastrointestinal tract is greatly enhanced, causing a larger portion of glutamine to reach the bloodstream. This ingenious formulation of combining glutamine with factors to radically increase its bioavailability allows the remarkable benefits of this supplement to be achieved at much lower and affordable doses.

I've been experimenting with this unique product, called Glutamine Express, for over a month now and I'm extremely impressed with the results it's given me. I'm actually very surprised to say that because I've used other glutamine supplements before and really haven't noticed any cosmetically significant improvements. Within a week of starting the glutamine/LPC combination product, I noticed a big increase in muscle size and fullness, probably due to the cellular hydration aspect of glutamine. Glutamine is the best cell-volumizer of all amino acids. I also had amazing pumps and increased lifting poundages when I took 1 tsp. (about 5 grams) mixed in water prior to workouts. I've since started taking another teaspoonful with my post-workout meal (blended in a protein shake) to replenish muscle glycogen reserves and increase anabolic swelling in my muscle cells. I'm hoping this will contribute to better protein synthesis during the all-important muscle mass recovery and growth period.

19 NOR: BODYBUILDING BREAKTHROUGH
By John Basedow

Following the Dietary Supplement Act of 1994, which burst open the door to a wider range of muscle builders and fat fighters, the most exciting addition to the marketplace has been the hormone manipulators. Often called the natural (and legal) alternative to steroids, the list includes DHEA, androstenedione, Tribulus terrestris, and androstenediol. All four of these products boost testosterone levels in varying degrees and any rise in testosterone levels should aid the effort to sculpt lean, muscular physiques. The latest, and based on my experience the best, entry onto the hormone manipulator list, surprisingly enough, doesn't increase testosterone production.

It's called 19-Norandrostenedione (19-Nor) and it has helped thousands of athletes dramatically increase muscularity and strength. 19-Nor is closely related to regular androstenedione but it takes a totally different pathway to aid muscle growth. Since .19-Nor is missing the 19th carbon molecule in its molecular chain, it's synthesized on the estrone pathway and not converted by the liver into testosterone. Instead, under the right conditions, it's metabolized to 19-Nortestosterone, otherwise known as nandrolone (also called Deca-Durabolin). While Deca-Durabolin is a powerful steroid available only with a prescription for medical usage, 19-Nor, its hormonal precursor, isn't restricted and thus can be sold over the counter. Since 19-Nor has an almost identical effect on muscle development and body composition as Deca, the introduction of 19-Nor to the marketplace has created a fierce demand for the product causing many distributors to be sold out within days.

Because 19-Nor works through a different pathway, many people seeking to maximize muscle growth "stack" it with androstenedione or androstenediol. Because both products have unique advantages, their combination is probably the best available method to increase muscle hardness and fullness. It is suggested, however, that one should separate ingestion of 19-Nor and androstenediol or androstenedione by up to six hours, due to the fact that both substances compete for the same androgen receptor sites.

19-Nor has an advantage over other hormonal supplements because nandrolone stays active much longer than testosterone and has a high anabolic to androgenic ratio. This finding is one of the reasons why Deca was such a popular steroid for those wanting to build muscle without sacrificing their hair. While most gym goers like anabolic ("muscle growth") benefits few people want to pay the "androgenic" price of side effects, like baldness, acne, and breast tissue enlargement, that frequently accompany them. 19-Nor delivers the good without the bad.

I tried 19-Nor, the Genetic Evolutionary (GEN) brand, over the past 3 weeks. As with all hormonal supplements, I think it's best to use short cycles, for example 3 weeks on/ 1 week off or 5 weeks on/ 2 weeks off. After the first week, I really noticed a big difference in muscularity. My shoulder and pec striations were more prominent, my vascularity increased and I felt pumped all the time. I also had a stronger desire to train and increased focus and intensity during my workouts. A few of the other guys I know reported even greater benefits by stacking 19-Nor with GEN's androstenediol. I prefer just concentrating on one product at a time and have found 19-Nor to be the best single muscle building supplement I've used. As far as recommended dosage goes, I took one 100 mg capsule per day about an hour prior to working out. The off-cycle periods are a good time to use a product like Glutamine Express to contend with rising cortisol levels and also to take Tribulus terrestris to rejuvenate the endocrine system and increase LH/Leuteinizing hormone, which positively influences the conversion of 19-Nor to nandrolone.
